I read this for my Meaning & Purpose in the Arts class and having that philosophy of art background really helped me understand this book. It was a fascinating read though, and I especially liked the different perspective for each chapter. The murder mystery at the end was a bit of a let down, but the read itself was very insightful and interesting.

It took me until half-way to figure out what this book reminds me of - The Name of the Rose. Didn't like that book, so that's not a good thing. Murder mysteries are meant to be interesting, this one isn't. Two guys talked about drawing a horse for 70 pages, and then I just couldn't care anymore.

This book somehow works really well with the coldest South American history of the century. It somehow feel damps and cold to read this book, despite all the references to colors and to what is red. The story takes place in 16th century Istanbul, and brings us into the very particular world of miniaturist artists. These artists all have different perspectives about the meaning of their art - should it honor Allah, the image, the idea of the image or the evil Westerners who honor the people in the portrait. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different person in the story, and some of the chapters are told from the perspective of a gold coin in someone's pocket, or a drawing. And many chapters are told by the voice of...the murderer, who is actually one of the artists. But don't worry, the ending wraps everything up into a real true fairy tale.
