ok so this was a quick novella that i really really enjoyed????? color me shocked!!!

the writing was fast-paced but well executed in my opinion. i think a lot of novellas really can't grasp my attention or give me everything that i want when i'm reading a story, but this one managed to do so!!! i really cared about the characters almost immediately and i believed that they had experience and history. i was rooting for them to be together too, which is usually the breaking point in romance novellas for me.

i'm actually invested in the plot as well and now that it has been set up for a whole series, i am looking forward to checking out the first official book!!!

It figures that this prequel was free on Amazon the day after I started reading book one. Even so, I don't actually think this should necessarily be read first. In fact, I think it was better that I read it after. I didn't quite like it as much so it would have been hard to say how much I would have wanted to jump into the series. Plus it doesn't actually give us anything extra really to jump up and say "read me first!" I love when books overlap, so it was fun when this one did with The Boss when I knew it would.

While I may not have loved it as much as book one, I did still enjoy this. Especially toward the end when Asher showed up. You gotta feel bad for Maddie a bit (well, any of these dragon mates really) considering she gets ripped from life as she knows it and thrown into a world of dragons where she's told to pick one to mate with. Oh, and if she chooses wrong, she dies. Because no pressure.

Fallon and Maddie already have a past, but one that was cut too short because Fallon thought she was human. When they see each other again, everything comes back to them both stronger than ever. And Fallon is determined to win Maddie back no matter what he has to do, even beg.

A good majority of the book is Fallon trying to woo Maddie, and Maddie trying to figure out what she should do. After all, she showed up there with another dragon that was so sure she was his mate that he almost had her convinced as well. But there's just no denying the connection she feels with Fallon. Even with her decision made, she asks him for time before he bonds them. That might not have been the best idea though when the two of them have to flee in the middle of the night because of a coup going on in Fallon's clan. More so, when they're attacked and either one of them could have died. They get their happy ending though and even a visit from the new king. I get why Fallon accepted the offer, but I really hope that at some point he goes back and rejoins his group.

Short but very good. It has some action. I love a good fighting scene.

Dragon shifters! I know dragon shifter stories have been going OFF online recently, but I honestly couldn't see the appeal. Wingspan? The Mate was a short, pretty underdeveloped paranormal novella that was just average for me.

There were some elements that I liked - the lore around unknowing female dragon shifters accidentally being arsonists and setting wildfires was interesting, as was the fated mates dying if they mated with the wrong person concept (even if it was a little sexist as only females died). I just felt like it was too instalovy and we were thrown to quickly into the world.

This is a brief novella set before the Inferno Rising series. I had already read that series without realizing that, so I was a little confused as to whether it was simultaneous or before the series I had read. I really liked how Ms. Owen showed Fallon and Maddie's connection in this book. I think this made the whole story. You did not get lost in the world-building. You saw their connection and how they re-established it. This was really a great read.

I feel bad for the low rating, but I really had trouble engaging with this story. Partly I think it was too complex politically for a novella, and certain points I think would have fit better in a full length novel. Maddie and Fallon needed a more solid backstory or more time for their courtship. But mostly, I really don't like male characters (even if they are the lead or "know" the other person and are "teasing" and would "back off" if told do so) who push or manipulate female characters' boundaries, especially their physical ones. Also the word "feisty" as a descriptor has really started to grate.

A good novella length book which doesn't really get into the details of the world Abigail Owen is building for her Fire's Edge series. A worthy book to read if you enjoy dragon shifter romances.
