Set over the course of three years, this book goes a little more in-depth. It also starts setting up Kel as someone who thrives being in command. One of my favorite characters is also introduced in this one, Kel's maid, Lalasa. Their dynamic is well-developed and does wonders for both their characterization. I think the climax of this one is better built up towards. There are hints about what's going to happen throughout the story, and as the problem starts to reveal itself your heart starts to sink because you know exactly what has happened. Something I enjoyed about this book is that Kel has her first crush, and it is just that—a crush. It never culminates into anything, and she eventually loses those feelings. It feels like such an accurate, realistically simple representation of romantic feelings, and I appreciate that Kel doesn't get set on one person for the rest of her life as is typical in YA books.
