I recently read "The Night of Your Life" -- a compilation of comic strips detailing other people's dreams, drawn by a single artist. I think they had appeared in alt-weeklies and the like, and I said that because the dreamers seemed like friends of the artist, the stories may have been more amusing to him than to me as a reader... nothing held them together.
This compilation of Julie Doucet's comics about dreams has some of that disappointing quality, but because they are her own, you can piece together themes and running jokes that her mind seems to be playing on her, and that makes the difference. It's also nice that the comics range over many years so you can see how her style has changed. I love how she tries to accurately capture her own diction in English.

It’s a quick read. At first I was not liking the drawings but it grew on me and I liked them better, but I preferred the detailed ones rather than the ones that are big or colored. What I didn’t like were the stories in themselves. At the few first stories I was like « that’s awful » and every time it was a dream and I became annoyed. Overall they weren’t interesting and rather creepy and seedy. The only one I rather liked was the dream with Nick Cave.

This was fun but the stories were so short! Very fun idea and a good quick read. She illustrates her dreams and I love her style I just wanted more story.

The drawings were super magical and had a lot going on. The stories were spontaneous and humorous in a dark way.

Though I didn't finish the book, I was impressed with Doucet's wild dreams and her honesty in sharing them. I found her frenchified-English to be charming and the subject matter heavily sexual and violent--that's dreams for some, I guess--but I ended up finding all I needed in the one frame featuring her "Holy Trinity."
