I remember distinctly not liking this book as much as the other two of this series when I read it back as a child (oh, yes I was doing a reread bit for a couple days), but it turns out that it's actually a fun book! I think it was just that Ms McCaffrey changed the focus of the story from my beloved friend Menolly and moved over to a newer face with Piemur. Piemur isn't a bad sort, just a rather impetuous boy who gets in a lot of trouble. There is some fun with the politics of Pern in the background and I found it to be as always a sweet and short read.

I’m curious why the author chose to write this book from the perspective of a different character. It is still a good book, but I was not expecting a different perspective going in. The book brings us back to the world of Pern and follows the adventures of Piemur, who seems to get himself in all sorts of trouble. Mellony is very much present throughout, either by being there or through Piemur’s memories/lessons from her. Pern is an interesting world and I am glad that I got exposed to this series. While the series has definitely aged, I think it can fine love with older children looking for a clean fantasy series. Perfect for kids transitioning from middle grade to teen books.

Although this isn't my favorite of the Harper Hall trilogy, I enjoyed this book.

01/27/2019: I re-read this book. So glad to be in the Pern world again.

02/22/2020: Reread

02/21/24: Reread. I noticed that I read these books in January or February.

Solid 3.5 stars. Sweet, coming-of-age story set in a wonderful land. I have seen reviews stating how terrible this story is compared with others in this series ... but since it is my introduction to Pern, I was pleasantly carried along. )I didn't realize that my collection of audiobooks were not in order! I'll have to fix things up before I continue. Ha ha! ).

I will say that I am very enamoured with the writing of Anna McCaffrey, and am so glad that I have found my way into her world of Pern.
