on the list of women who can do no wrong in my eyes, and i will protect forever, clare has risen among the ranks and she’s going to stay there. i didn’t really expect much from the first volume but i found myself completely engrossed and in love with the simplicity of the story and the way it was told. additionally, i was in the mood to read a fantasy manga which felt just right and this delivered.

there was no heavy info dumping or long winded explanations. instead, the lore was shown, not told in a very simplistic and straightforward manner that really worked for the story.

things i loved:

- clare’s bewitching badassery and i’m excited there’s even more of that to come
- minor SPOILER………….. that clare allowed raki to join her on her adventure because it made me so happy to see her have a companion and for raki to have someone too
- raki’s ability to cook. for some reason i love seeing characters eat and his eating and cooking was an added bonus
- the depth shown in clare’s character even though it just hit the surface but it was done really well.

the first volume really got my attention and i will definitely be continuing the series. i just wish the art was much more detailed and in the style of berserk but the style still works so i won’t be complaining much.

it feels so good to find another manga series to obsess over and hopefully i don’t lose interest too soon.

This is a dark, horror manga, where blood and gore is the focus. It's fantasy too, and compelling with its strong protagonist. I really enjoyed this. And I can't wait for more.

3.5 stars. Pretty corny at times (ex the ranking system) and very focused on the male gaze... but fun and engaging (cool fight scenes/artwork) with some interesting plot twists. Sometimes it's hard to keep all the characters straight since they look so alike, especially about halfway through the series. I enjoyed the smaller world lore that kept expanding.

Just based on this volume alone, it's nothing I'm really excited about. That said, I will give it a couple more volumes and see if more character development and plot draw me in. The art's a bit different, not bad, but not really what I'm used to. I do like the clean lines and the action is very easy to follow.
