I wanted to love this book so much - it definitely had the potential.

I LOVED the movie reference first and foremost.... I think the younger generation might not get them - but that's just fine with me cause I did! And they were FUN!

I liked that this had that juxtaposition of the two elections 4 years apart. I thought I was going to like it from the guys POV but I just couldn't root for Nick. If fact.. it's been a few days since I finished and I actually had to go back and check what his name was.

He wasn't very likeable at all to me and if Ellie hadn't been so in love with him ... I probably would have hated him. But I wanted her to let him go. I wanted her to find someone better.

Nick was pretty flippant and rude to her for the most part. I wish it had focused on the few sweet parts more (like the videos). But the banter between him and Ellie - he was just terrible with the things he said! He was generally not a great boyfriend who just seemed so lazy - and by the end I really hoped they wouldn't end up together.

It was a cute story otherwise - the plot moved along nicely - i really enjoyed all the other supporting characters and I read this one very fast. The best part for me was definitely the the movie references.

3.5 ⭐️ overall

Incredibly quirky, lots of film references, and just a tad pretentious. Nick is a hopeless romantic but really doesn’t believe he can be the lead in anyone’s story. He’s so self deprecating at times I wanted to slap him.
It’s a good story, more like the anatomy of a relationship through good times and bad.

While I didn’t necessarily dislike this book, I also didn’t love it. The narrator is looking back on his former relationship with hints of hope and regret, and it’s a nice remembrance. However, this book is marketed as a romance or rom-com, and it just didn’t fit the bill for those in my opinion. I would just consider it a Contemporary NA story.

This novel has so much heart!

In the vein of One Day, Love, Unscripted dips and dives around the timeline of Nick and Ellie’s relationship, using the 2008 American election night as a base point.

The characters are well rounded, flawed, loveable, relatable, and complex. I enjoyed spending time with them immensely!

Very rarely do I want the main character to not get the girl/guy.

The cover and description of ‘Love, Unscripted’ had me expecting a fluffy, light-hearted rom-com. It had its moments, but that’s not what this book was. It was more. It was real. We’ve all known Nick and Ellie. This wasn’t just a story about falling in love, it was about what happens after that. It was about the choices people make to grow together, or grow apart, and ultimately to just grow up. The way Nicholls broke down the story, alternating between the distant past when they first feel in love, the present where they have split, and the more recent past where things fell apart, was such a unique and powerful way to tell a love story, and without giving anything away, I think it ended perfectly. I sincerely enjoyed the book and hope there will be future works by Owen Nicholls to look forward to. Thank you to NetGalley, Nicholls, publishers, and anyone else who made it possible for me to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the perfect story to remember us that love is unexpected, risky and special, but it’s worth every minute!
Nick’s life is a total mess right now; Ellie has just left him and he doesn’t know how to act about it; really! He hasn’t told anyone that Ellie has left, he even is planning to hang her clothes on the window just in case anyone asks if she is not living with him anymore! He has been always looking for the “perfect move love”, but I am sure that you are well aware that it doesn’t exist, so he will have to start changing his way to see things if he wants to have a different life! Love is something different for everyone and worth every minute of it, but is never perfect; it has ups and downs! Nick will share his memories from the beginning of the relation with Ellie and from the present, when he has to re-think everything he has done and start discovering what is really love!
I loved all the funny situations during the story and the sweet scenes of some of the most famous love movies, I’ve seen almost all of them! I am a movie addict and I suppose I have my preconceived way to see love, but I would like to think that love is like the movies but better! And I think that’s what Nick will have to learn on this beautiful story, that nothing is perfect because this is the best way to be, a perfect love would not be as funny and interesting as it is if everything goes always as planned, don’t you think?
While you are reading this book you’ll have always a smile on your face while you remember all the beautiful movies quoted in the book!
Ready for Love, Unscripted?

There's really nothing more disappointing than a guy who has ZERO life ambition; and that's how the main character of this book was. The characters kinda sucked, the plot was lacking, this whole book was just boring. Neat idea, poor execution.
