This is definitely one of my lest favorite Shakespeare plays. It had its moments, but overall it was just too unbelievable and came off as trying too hard to be like all of the other masterpieces thrown together. Oh well. Maybe I'll try this one again in a few years.

Going to start saying “Exit pursued by bear” every time I leave a room so if you never see me again you’ll always wonder…

This is a delightfully bonkers little tale of the late Shakespeare era and forgiveness becomes a large and lovely theme. Which like, this is quite the act of forgiveness as Leontes is so insecure it practically ends his entire bloodline. Don’t be like Leontes, friends.
But perhaps do be a whimsically weird fella like my guy Autolycus! Because apparently you can be a ‘roguish peddler’ and pickpocket as long as you are a cool and charismatic one. And sort of save the day? What a guy.

Read this as it is the favorite Shakespearean work by my favorite writer, [a:Jeanette Winterson|9399|Jeanette Winterson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1561070665p2/9399.jpg], and in preparation to read [b:The Gap of Time|24727420|The Gap of Time|Jeanette Winterson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1438620932l/24727420._SY75_.jpg|44353880] (will review later). Fun, quirky, and kind of all over the place, this is a charming play.

As I've read this 3 times on 3 days, I think I need to give it 5 stars - I don't necessarily think it's one of Shakespeare's better plays, but it is one of his more interesting and thought provoking works.

This was so weird because despite being a comedy, the first three acts are very reminiscent of a tragedy and then all of a sudden turns into a comedy in the last two acts. But like Paulina is such a slay

In my opinion, as a pure read, Shakespeare can be hard to understand and not the most engaging.

But of course, these plays are not meant to be just read and Shakespeare's power today lies in the power of adaptation.

I went for the 9th time to the Dutch production of Shakespeare (would have been my 10th anniversary if it wasn't for corona) and this time the play was The Winter's Tale.

I really liked that they played up the side of a woman being accused of a disgraceful act she didn't commit by man in charge based just of a hunch and she having no power to do anything against it.

It modernizes it in a way that rings true today.

The humor was also great, the theater group really has the punchlines and psychical comedy down.

The theater stage was bland this year (nothing but grey carpet) but that's because it needed renovation.

It wasn't Macbeth (both Shakespeare greatest and the best theater production of that group) but it certaintly was once again an enjoyable time.

Anyway, you reading this have no way what I am talking about so I end this piece of journalling here.

Cheers!
