The author is obsessed with gross food and cannibalism. Almost every story is about one of those two things. Plus all the stories felt the same. Not interested enough to finish.

Anthology. As all collections there are some stories that stand out more than others. I enjoyed this a lot! ☺️

While I found this incredibly enjoyable, I would recommend that readers new to Sayaka Murata start with her novel Convenience Store Woman rather than this anthology.

Like all of Sayaka Murata's works, these stories challenge our ideas about taboo and social norms. If you read and enjoyed Convenience Store Woman you'll have an idea but it's even closer to Earthlings. There's a lot of taking that idea of being an outcast for one reason or another and pushing that to an 11 for exploration.

Stories are shocking and funny at the same time!

All the trigger warnings haha
The first story was the strongest, and it slowly devolved from there. I loved the book as a whole and what Sayaka Murata is doing, but the execution here could have used more fine-tuning.

no one can tell me that sayaka murata ain’t trying to normalize cannibalism after finishing this and having read earthlings prior, girl wants to try to eat somebody
joke aside this was a mind boggling, sometimes highly uncomfortable read, i kept coming back to it wanting to discover what the next story would explore
never would have imagined a story about being in love with a curtain would be so thrilling but that’s what this author will do to you
