It was a cute middle grade historical ghost story. I just didn't think the plot developed enough and I didn't really understand how the curse was broken... It wasn't boring but it wasn't great.

Very well-told insight into an appalling time and way of thinking.
Switching perspectives between the sisters also made it a quick read.

This would have been a solid five had this book been longer, which would have provided more space for relationship development. Otherwise, the story, characters, and magical setting were fascinating. I immediately adored both of the dual protagonists, Charlie and Magnolia, and was invested in their unique situations.

An engaging, easy to follow, eye-opening story. It was thought-provoking and gave me insight into Southern culture.

Seeing the bond develop between the sisters was heartwarming. I was interested in Magnolia's story and her choice in whether to continue living as "white" or to be open with her black heritage.

As much as I enjoyed this book, the ending felt too abrupt. I wish it had taken more time for character development and
to show more of Magnolia's life after she made her choice.

I recommend this book, especially for teen readers. Even as an older reader myself, I gained a lot from this. It offers plenty of themes for an engaging discussion.

While the overall plot and character development was good, I felt the pacing was off at times. I would have enjoyed the book more if she had spent more time explaining in some areas, and less time in other areas. I felt the overall historical context was good and vital to read, and was presented in a very realistic and respectful well.
