"...we have to educate ourselves on the possibilities of what a new world could look like, before writing it off as fantasy. Isn’t everything just a fantasy before it’s achieved?"

This is an incredibly raw, vulnerable, and unflinching memoir. I loved getting to know Munroe better and having the opportunity to learn more about a range of aspects of the trans experience. I also hugely appreciated the ultimate focus on self-love and the exploration of how working through trauma to achieve this its its own important transition.

I did find the narrative to be a bit muddled at times and feel as if perhaps too much was being attempted to be covered in a relatively short book, but in the end things do come together well and this was just such an incredibly important and insightful reading experience.

A must read if you want to learn more about the trans experience. Beautifully written, she's such an inspiration for the trans youth.

"The goal is to collectively transition out of shame and into pride as a society."

Starting Pride month off with "Transitional" by Munroe Bergdorf. I've followed Munroe on social media for years and love her, so as soon as she released a book I made a special trip to Category is Books to pick up a copy. Obviously it's then sat on my shelves for a couple of months because who has ever bought a book and read it right away? Madness!
Transitional is an autobiography but also has lots of information about Munroe's activism in feminism, trans rights and racism. It manages to be both very personal and highlight the issues faced more widely in these communities at the same time.
There's a focus on growth, change and healing and the ways in which we all transition as people. She has, very successfully, tied her personal experience into a look at society as a whole that I think most people could relate to.
TW for racism; homophobia and transphobia; sexual assault; self harm and eating disorders.

 10/10 recommended to everyone!

I'm in two minds about Transitional - I found the first half in particular extremely engaging and well-written, and I highlighted quite a few sections. However, as the book progresses, it loses track of its theme of "transition" somewhat. At times, this train of thought is replaced by strong feelings and righteous anger, and is significantly affecting - however, at other times the aim of the book becomes slightly confused. Transitional walks the line between being a memoir and an essay collection - sometimes more successfully than others. There are some really interesting considerations of various aspects of society here - not just being trans, but race, gender more generally, eating disorders, and sexual violence (and please do pay attention to any trigger warnings linked to these topics!). At points though, especially if you have read a lot of other books on these topics, there is a slight lack of both depth and emotional connection. I found Transitional to be a really interesting read, but the implementation could have been refined somewhat.
