I enjoyed this. love the twist to the typical regency by adding magic and creatures like zombies. the downside is it was really slow and repetitive. i feel like it could have been a lot shorter.

I will give the next book a try and hopefully its not as slow.

I liked this book very much even though it was a book about monsters it was quite a cozy read. I definitely recommend this book and really want to read the other books of this series.

This one was perfectly fine but unfortunately, not more than that for me.

The writing flows easily, but maybe the whole this-is-how-they-talked-in-the-olden-days felt a bit forced for me. Similarly, the characters were interesting enough, there was plenty of quirk and I liked Hannah, the protagonist, for being scientifically minded, pragmatic and competent.

My main gripe that all of the book felt somewhat formulaic. The plot was fine but the insight that lead to the solution of the mystery did not feel earned by the investigating characters. It was just like a lightbulb went on in their heads, bringing with it the epiphany.

The romance that is being set up in this first part of the series felt rather forced and contrived as well.

Mostly I feel like this book will surely be a lovely read for fans of this particular genre (supernatural mystery set in Regency Britain), but for me it felt a bit too much like it was just ticking off the boxes without offering much new in addition to that.

I mean, that sort of formula works great for other genres, so ... sure, why not? It just wasn't enough for me.

I won this book through a giveaway. Although it is not my usual genre, I absolutely loved it! It kinda reminded me of the tv series Izombie

The premise for this story was…interesting: a face paint used by mostly women ends up almost killing the women in a British town ….”Almost” because they don’t die, they turn into zombies?

Now, no one wants to admit they’re zombies…So they all hide it under veils, gloves, masks, and eat “cauliflower” via secret food delivery company.

It’s set in historical period, with a main character who is constantly telling us that’s she’s destined to be a spinster because she’ll never marry and who dresses up as a man to help her father solve gruesome murders, because no fine lady would ever do such a thing.

The main character was so boring and 2D dimensional and all her dialogue was very “I’m not like all the other vain delicate girls out there and I’m fine being single-“ only for her to be forced into proximity with a man she hates. Oh no.

The forced pairing between the main character and the man who’s rude to everyone was so unbearable.

The story felt kinda slow and was a little confusing. The premise took me such a long time to get over because it seemed so silly, but the way the world was built around it was interesting. It almost felt thought out but the “mystery” really fell flat for me.

It also tried to be humorous but honestly it just came off as annoying.

I won’t be reading the second book.
