This book annoyed me (with the love triangle) until the last quarter. Honestly, if the last book is not exclusively Roth/Layla, I will riot. 😂 I understand the series is more than just a romance, but Roth was more of a side character in this book, and I need more of him. That is all.
Also, I realize that a lot of this book was/is still a process for Layla to embrace her demonic side, and part of that is examining her relationship with Zayne and figuring out what that means. I respect that. (However, since Z has his own separate trilogy later on, I’d kind of hoped to see more of Roth in this story as a central figure. Ththis is just the very superficial part of myself wanting the naughty boy, though.) For those who have read Legendborn by Tracy Deonn,Zayne and Nick give off VERY similar energy. Their fathers are both utter pricks, but they themselves are the token golden boys. Good. Nice. I don’t dislike either of them, but give me Roth and Sel any day, pls/thx. I also got annoyed at Z quite a bit when he basically refused to acknowledge L’s demonic side; or not refuse it, maybe, but just…believed in her Warden side to such an extent that it canceled out her demonic side. In a way, it felt vaguely gaslighty.
I felt like the plot kind of lost it’s way in the middle, and everything important happened in the last 80%. It was an intense last bit, but I do wish it had been better spaced out. Or the pacing adjusted? I’m not quite sure.

I’m not gonna lie to you, this is not good. But I like it. So, do with that what you will. I’m actually really glad that I accidentally read the storm & fury series first because i am 100% Team Roth, but if I had read this first I might be team Zayne and I don’t like that. So far I recommend reading out of order and treating this as a prequel series. This also might be the first thing I’ve ever read with a proper love triangle, and…. I don’t hate it.
