I would have a hard time pointing out what made Ash Princess so enjoyable. The main plot (magic princess with dead parents fights against the powers that be, finds romance along the way) is the most generic YA fantasy plot you can imagine. I feel like I’ve read – and tried to read – so many of these in the past few years, yet Ash Princess managed to slowly pulled me in.

Simply put, Ash Princess took all the usual tropes and themes of a YA fantasy and executed them well. The story moved along smoothly, giving you time to discover the world and its characters. There was a good balance of everything you could hope for (romance, action, magic, etc.) and just the right dose of twists.

I also really liked Theo. I felt for her so much. I both wanted to applaud her and protect her. She was brave and determined, and her passion for justice really resonated with me. Everything considered, I felt I really understood most of the choices she made. And for once, I felt the romance wasn’t too “insta-love”, and I was okay with the love triangle.

More than the romance, I really liked how the author explored the theme of friendship. Theo’s relation with Cress was my favorite. The power imbalance between them made things uncertain and complex, in a way I haven’t often seen in the YA fantasy I’ve read. I really wasn’t sure where their story would go, but I appreciated every moment of it.

All in all, I’d say Ash Princess was a solid first book.

Nothing new here with typical tropey characters doing tropey things…. however I do like the magic system so far and it’s little different to what I’ve read.

Theo/Thora (well who knows cuz she can’t even decide) is a pretty annoying but she needs to be I think to drive the story with her indecision… which allows things to happen.

I’m interested in the development of Cress more so and the stuff with Soren was just not believable tbh. I also thought the Kaiserin would have had a little more involvement.

I think i am in a love/hate relationship with this book.

Don’t get me wrong, i liked it. I think it’s above average books, but it was not one of my favs.

I read a lot of this kind of books and i felt it was kind of predictable…. and i felt it could be a lot more of developement of the main character. Maybe in the second and third books of the series.

Also, i liked a lot how the author made all the relationships in the book, very interesting.

I will continue with this series as I feel there is potential here, I just feel this could have been tightened up quite a bit. Nothing really happens until the end and her conversations and thought processes simply run in circles - lots of talk, no action. Also, a love triangle that’s not well developed and feels like it’s just been inserted to cause conflict for Theodosia. Anyway, quick, easy read that has potential for this series.

This was not a hard read but it was actually kind of boring. Nothing really happened, I did not feel any connection between the characters, I did not feel any connection to the MC, she actually seemed quite unlivable and too unrealistic. The whole plot seems just incredibly illogical and unbelievable.

Solid debut with great story. Thora finds her inner strength, sheds her years of tunnel vision and works to start her own rebellion.
