I really enjoyed this book! I was intrigued at the outset by the color magic and the way that needs to be tended to by each character (because perceiving color is different for different folks) and how Emelin does not realize the full extent of her powers until she is trained to use more than one color at once. I always enjoy when character conflict is mommy-issues... because same! The ASL-lover in me also really appreciated the push for Creon to learn a new way to communicate through hand signs, and how he is hesitant at first but wants to connect with Em badly enough to learn. I do love a MMC who is morally gray and will legit kill for the FMC, but would never touch her if she didn't want it. I felt like the exploration of how he's been trying to
overthrow his mother and the kingdom
could have gone a bit deeper, but I am excited to continue reading the series and see how things work out for the motley crew who join forces at the end.

This series has RUINED ME. The chemistry and nuance between the characters, the magic system, the lore… I’m obsessed. I just plowed through books 1 and 2 as well as the prequel in a week and I’m dying waiting on the third book to release!!

I’m not seeing nearly enough reviews on the magic system- I read a LOT of fantasy series, and I’ve never seen a style this creative. Color mixing is such a cool idea, and it adds such subtle nuances to the way magic can be used in both huge and subtle ways. I loved every turn of the page because there were always new variables to think about with their magic and how they would solve problems with it.

This book takes a really simple fantasy romance structure and fleshes it out in a really great way- I described it to a friend as “ACOTAR but with depth”. The characters have real nuance, they grow and learn with each other, and I was so satisfied following the thought process through the journey. I really can’t recommend enough.

PS- SIGN LANGUAGE ROMANCE. SIGN LANGUAGE DURING SEX. SEXY ACCESSIBILITY. LET’S GOOOOO 🔥🔥🔥🔥
