It's difficult to state the importance of this little book as it marks a watershed moment (one of many admittedly as social change is never brought about by one event) in the history of the LGBTQ+ community.
Miller's essay and the attendant commentary, preface, afterword and appendices highlight what it was to be gay in the US in the late 60s early 70s and show how far attitudes have changed and sadly how they haven't.
This should be one everyone's read list.

it’s a joy to be able to have a writer reach through the decades to tell you that the way you feel has always been around, that your elders struggled and overcame before you and that you can and must continue the struggle for those who come after you. miller grew up in marshaltown iowa in the 1920s and 30s and his experiences are painfully similar to my experience of growing up in dallas center iowa in the 2000s and 2010s. he saw tangible improvements towards social acceptance of homosexuals in a conservative society and i must believe that the current culture war against those advancements will not last. thank you merle miller, you make me want to be a better homosexual
