The first volume of In the Clear Moonlit Dusk feels like the typical beginning of a high school Shojo story, hence the three stars. This honestly disappoints me a bit since the mangaka is one of my favorites, but I’ve noticed that I enjoy her series less and less with more time passing which is just unfortunate. One reason for this is maybe the lack of depth that Daytime Shooting Star still had in my opinion.

This story centres around the heroine Yoi who’s treated like a prince because of her looks and behaviour. This leads to her struggling with boys until Kohaku gives her his attention. Yeah, that’s honestly everything I can say about the story. It’s nothing special and has so many cliché moments just in this volume alone, like the love interest saving the heroine from sexual assault (still hate this cliché), the interruption by phone, or the scene at the first-aid room which also made me really uncomfortable lmao. Furthermore, their relationship is just progressing too fast for my taste. They already fall for each other in the first chapter and at the end of this volume,
they decide to “test date”

The art is great as always, but I had the feeling that I’ve seen some of the frames before, especially since Daiki and Kohaku both have blonde hair. I have to be honest: I neither like the design of the lead nor of the love interest. I also don’t like the personality of the love interest; he gives me some creepy vibes. Yoi has at least some personality and it’s nice that we see some of her family life, but I’m not sure what I think about her feelings of not being female “enough”, as if short hair and a deep voice can’t be feminine as well. I hope she won’t change just for the sake of her classmates treating her more feminine.

By the way, has anyone else noticed how all of Yamamori’s series (besides Sugars) have a celestial body in their title? I really love this.
