I liked this slow family drama with intense werewolf lore.

If you are going into this book, prepare for a coming of age story of a boy being raised by his Aunt and Uncle who just happen to be werewolves. While this book had hair-raising moments and violence, it was a story focused on trying to exist in a world not designed for you. The violence was adjacent to that more than anything else.

Written in SGJ's slashing words, it was a journey of a book (in a good way). It is another one of SGJ's books were it takes me about 50% of the book to get into it, but then I fly through the last 50%. This is one of SGJ's older books and it does show (he's become a much improved writer), but this books was such a spin on the head of different werewolf tropes, coming of age stories, and horror itself.

Note - If men speaking in Texas accents give you George Bush vibes, you might want to read this physically.

I don't know whether to call this a horror novel, a coming of age, a story about family, a werewolf story... It's all of that, and more. I love the take on werewolves in this story, and how the lore is slowly being revealed. There are really intriguing characters, people with very skewed morals. It took me a bit to get into the story, but once I did I loved it. There's this alternating of first and third person chapters in a nonlinear timeline that's sown so well together.

This isn't a traditional horror story - if it even is horror. It's quite slow paced, and it follows an unnamed narrator as he grows up and comes of age, waiting to "wolf out" in his dysfunctional werewolf family without knowing for certain that he has the gene.

I recommend this book, but be vary of the warnings!
