Despite its very slow pace it was a fantastic book! Extremely witty, (passive) aggressive and critical towards American patriotism.

Also why does the book cover have to be so hideous

Really enjoyed this book. It’s both very real and very dystopian. It’s well written and I’m a sucker for a story told from a child’s perspective. Ng wrote a good and suspenseful plot that is heartbreaking and inspirational - highly recommend.

This wasn’t my typical read with the historical and political references present throughout, but it definitely touched on some important topics and themes. I felt the ending could have been much stronger and more reflective than it was. I know it’s a stylistic choice, but I did not like that all the dialogue was in line and not in quotation marks. I felt it was too cryptic and unclear because of it. I’d recommend this to a strong high school reader or any adult who enjoys topics related to politics, history, and racial injustices, but I would not recommend for average high school readers looking for an engaging captivating fiction read.
