I wasn't quite as invested in the first half of the issues here. The first few issues are part of an event. Unfortunately, with major comic events a lot of the time the stakes are not that high since they are often retconned. Additionally, they usually are not relevant to the other plot points later since they are isolated events. The second half was a lot more interesting to me. Hank is dabbling with sorcery and it ends up having major consequences for both him and the team. We get to see some old faces (i.e. Madelyne Pryor) come back to wreck some havoc. We have a few interesting interactions between Jean and Scott, who I find a lot more endearing than their older adult counterparts, honestly. There is a bit of humor sprinkled in between the more serious moments. They mostly serve to remind the reader that before anything else this group of X-men is young and are very good friends. I appreciated the conclusion to this arc. Even when members of the team makes mistakes it drives the point home that they always have the X-men to come back to as a found family.

Interrupting the mediocre status quo that Bunn was trying to set is the sub-mediocre Secret Empire era where, ugh, a large quantity of Marvel heroes are brainwashed into fighting against their usual interests (see also Axis, Inferno, The Shadow King era before the X-Men 1991 relaunch). And then ... who cares. There are barely characters in this book. It's just a collection of silly rehashes of previous X-books.

The art is fine, if not inventive, but inventive art would be a complete waste on this story.

A bit bittersweet since I've already read later books in which Young Jean Grey is apparently gone. This book is normally what I hate in a Marvel book - an out of continuity big even story in which nothing is going to matter later almost certainly. And yet Jean Grey, sigh. She's done so much better in this form - the art, the writing. Heck even the relationship with Scott makes more sense here. Clearly appreciating this book means looking at the hero x-men and looking away at the villain x-men. But even bringing in hell didn't wreck this book for me.

-Cap and Hydra? Yeah right...
+ Xavier reminders
?? Don’t know how I feel about this version of Havoc... all changed and broody
-telepathically mapping shouldn’t matter when Havoc literally just blasted you...
+it talks
?? What’s in the box...odd
+Emma/Scott/Jean
+Magneto stylin and riling
+Jean listing men she thinks are cute
-another using spells wrong that leads to bad peeps, overdone, and not that interesting take over heroes type of baddies
-Demons, vampires, experimented mutants, throwing a bunch of ideas doesn’t make a good story of all of them have barely any space to stick
-sometimes cast of characters are sidelined so other teams can tackle the threats and sometimes it so obvious that that’s why they are doing here
+Yay hopefully no more wizard Hank

I’m super confused. Maybe I need to read all of Gold before continuing with Blue?

Meh. I wasn't really a fan of the Secret Empire storylines when they took over main comic arcs. Plus this comic is kinda meh already. Makes for a not great volume.
