Hadn't finished this one before, and even ended up skimming a lot this time.

It is cool to get a look at the Empire post-Lady, and to see some more wizards between the levels of Goblin/One-Eye and the Taken. Forced as it starts to feel, the Limper is still a good villain. The idea of the Spike conferring that horrid infection is great too.

But also, feels like this story is 20% weird creeps with the spike thieves and 40% sad former great character creeps with Silent and Raven still squabbling over Darling.

Maybe one day I'll really sit myself down to fully read this one, but for now I'd much rather return to Croaker and co.

While I appreciated learning about what eventually happened to the Silver Spike, I was left feeling a tad disappointed by this book. The Raven arc kinda just fizzled into nothing. Actually, the whole of the last third of this book kinda fizzled into nothing. That ending was . . . a choice.

Not as good as the other books. There were storylines that seems unnecessary or could have been shrunk a ton. BUT, pulled on my heart strings for the characters I love.

Spoiler Spoiler

My heart is mourning...again! Stop taking characters I love away from me! 😭

Glen Cook does a great job of having us care for random, new, side characters. Smeds grew on me over time. Old Man Fish is a bad ass mo-fo.

This book says it's 3.5, but it's really book 4.1 and takes place at the same time as some of the events in book 4. I would recommend reading it after book 4 because of this, but if you read it before book 4 it shouldn't ruin too much for you in that story line. This book wraps up Raven, Darling, and Silent's story lines. Definitely a good addition to the overall series.

For reasons I don’t totally understand I didn’t like this book. I like The Black Company but this one just didn’t do it for me.
