Had to read this for class but it’s very engaging and interesting so I wanted to put it in my read list of the year. I find myself agreeing a lot with Chomei’s reasonings and mentality and wonder if I should go build a ten foot hut in the woods and maybe I’d be happier. His observations of the disasters at the time are striking and horrific but truthful. His critique on civilization is often how I find myself thinking of the world are me. I definitely would recommend reading this and I hope I get to read it entirely in the original Classical Japanese someday.

I only read the beginning essay, "The Ten Foot Square Hut," which is too short to publish on its own. Easily read in an hour or less, with some interesting accounts of medieval Japanese history, as well as insights on living simply. This guy was the original Thoreau, and way more hardcore. He lived in a TEN-SQUARE-FOOT house! Henry David ain't got nothing on that.

Un text clàssic del 1212 (sí, 1212) que forma part del currículum escolar al Japó. Explica la història de l'escriptor, que decideix fer-se eremita i retirar-se a una cabana molt petita. Des d'aquí reflexiona sobre l'acumulació de riquesa material, i en critica la poca durabilitat parlant dee diferents episodis que va patir la ciutat de Kyoto entre el 1177 i el 1185:
- Un incendi destrueix gairebé un terç de la ciutat l'any 1177, afectant sobretot la zona més rica de la ciutat (aleshores capital)
- Un tornado recorre 2 km per una altra zona de la ciutat el maig de l'any 1180
- Al cap de 2 mesos, al juliol de 1180, l'emperador decideix moure la capital a una altra ciutat (propera, però suficientment lluny com per què la noblesa lel vulgui seguir i desplaçar totoes les seves riqueses)
- Vuit mesos després, l'emperador decixeix tornar la capital a Kyoto
- Una fam afecta la zona entre els anys 1181 i 1182
- Un terratrèmol molt fort afecta la mateixa zona el 1185
El text segueix sent molt actual avui en dia. A casa nostra, per aquells volts tenim les obres de Ramon Llull (1232-1316) i el Llibre dels Fets de Jaume I (1270).
El llibre té una introducció del traductor, Jordi Mas, que m'ha agradat molt. Explica els esdeveniments que marquen el text, la vida de l'autor i decisions que s'han pres durant la traducció, cosa que valoro molt perquè és poc freqüent i m'agrada llegir-ho.
