This is the story of Serapio, a man molded for destiny since childhood through the only interesting fantasy mythos of this story that remains underdeveloped by the end. This is also the story of Xiala, a character that feels born from another story with no purpose other than to receive exposition dumps. This is also also the story of Naranpa, the mind bogglingly young and naive head of a a society's religious institution that makes no sense, whose only purpose is to be the center of the world's dumbest coup and ensure there is a book 2 for some reasonsusanatherly's review against another edition

I can't say anything about this without spoiling the story. Great characters. Novel plot...with plot twists galore. Highly recommended if you are in the mood for something unexpected.

High/epic fantasy is not usually my thing so please take my review with a grain of salt. I loved Roanhorse's Sixth World series and decided to check this one out. It has a lot of great world building and interesting characters. It wasn't really my thing but I'm glad it exists. I'm glad that one of the main characters uses neopronouns. I was disappointed and surprised to see that character gendered in a binary way in the final chapter.

Epic. The cast of characters introduced is initially intimidating in terms of figuring out who is who and what side of the conflict they are on (and even what the real conflict is), but once it all comes together, the momentum builds and does not stop. The world-building and mythology are impeccable. The action scenes are heart-stopping. Naranpa and Xiala are inspirational, and Okoa's arc is aspirational. The ending was shocking; I couldn't believe I had reached the end of the book. Excited for the sequel!
