Five super fun and weird stars because I just had a blast reading it. No further evaluation needed.

What did I just read?? Some really great ideas here, but WAY too long. A horror, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, crime novel all in one. It was creepy and strange, you’ll need a huge imagination to get into this one. Overall, I just couldn't get into the “feel” of the book and it left me with too many questions.

I must say that Mrs. Benjamin is one of my all-time favorite characters, she gets 5 stars.

Pretty awesome.
Could have been about 200 pages shorter though.

3.5 - enjoyed the mystery and creepiness of the first half, enjoyed the second half somewhat less. I loved the setting where most of the story took place, and the mix of genres. I didn't really love any of the characters, but they were outshined by the atmosphere and the narrative.

There were things in this book that I disagreed with. Things that angered me. But I feel like the way it all came together at the end made up for it.

So first, some things that annoyed me. The book was a bit rambling at times. Sometimes I got lost trying to figure out what was going on.
The beginning in particular confused the crap out of me and I got pretty frustrated, trying to get into the book at first.
Mona wasn't the most likeable of characters to me. She's hostile, really hostile, not really expressive, and a bit of a dolt at times. I seriously was yelling at my Kindle like "OMG Mona stop being so thick, we already went over this"
There is some seriously upsetting s*** in this book. Some of it to do with children...and as I have three children of my own there were points where it just made me mad, like it was just being used for shock value, or to pull on my heart-strings. I'm not saying that is actually the case, but that was my knee-jerk reaction.

So there's that. But then, then....something happened.
I found out that I was really, deeply emotionally invested in what happened to Mona...even though I really couldn't figure out when that had happened. I cried so hard at the end. I can't even explain. And the rest of the day I was just ...worn out. I just kept thinking about this book. I was fairly useless for any type of conversation.

So maybe there were some cheap tricks played with my emotions. But they WORKED even though I knew they were happening. In my book, that is a win. That is a successful story. So I tip my hat to the author with a "Well played sir."
