Societal expectations press heavily upon both father and son in a novel about forbidden love and family secrets. Amidst a series of socio-political movements that changed American culture, Arthur Wise and his son, Hilly, struggle to find a sense of contentment in this ever-changing world. Two seemingly different generations are put at odds with one another, but the things they grapple with are not so different.

Nadler provides readers with an interesting glimpse into mid-twentieth century America, but leaves many characters underdeveloped. The story-line itself has the potential to leave readers in shock and awe, but with so many of the characters lacking depth, it was hard to feel that. The novel begins as a promising read and ends with the reader counting down the pages until the lackluster story is over.
