A really good history with great art. Long for a picture book, though.

The illustrations in this book are GORGEOUS! And the story was great too. However, I felt like the actual font and the text didn't meet the same level as the illustrations so it felt a little disjointed. It also didn't really feel like a children's picture book... but was great for me, an adult, to learn a little about an artist who's come in and out of my life without really realizing it - I had deeply studied Shahn's Saco and Vanzetti painting in history class but had never known Shahn's other work and history.

This book has a lot going on, at times a bit overwhelming. It is not easy to honor an artist by trying to imitate but not copy.

This is just absolutely damn wonderful. The combo of Evan Turk and Ben Shahn had me poring over every page.

The story itself was really interesting, but the art wasn't quite as captivating.

I'm a huge fan of Evan Turk's art and I love the textures and colors in this book about an American artist I knew nothing about.

This is a gorgeously detailed picture book biography of artist and activist Ben Shahn. It's fascinating and inspiring and covers his personal and professional history as well as his involvement in various social justice and civil rights movements for the better half of a century. It also definitely highlights his Jewishness as well. The art is lovely (and I read it to my baby niece who really loved the colours) and fits the story perfectly. Overall just what I hope for from a picture book biography, and one I would especially recommend for kids interested in history, art, Jewish stories, or social justice.
