If I'm honest, this book took me longer to get into that the first 2. I personally prefer the story when Alex and Connor are bouncing off each other, but my persistence paid off in the end. And the twist ending - wow! That earned it a star on its own. Can't wait for the next installment!

Another one read aloud to my daughter- pretty solid for a kid's book, inventive story, mostly benign but with odd moments of violence and not truly in character with rest of the book. It's interesting how when the villains are fairy tale characters (as in the other books) they don't really ever actually harm anyone, just threaten, but the villains in this sequel are historical figures and they actually do harm and even kill people. Most of the book is typical and has the characteristic "quick fix" solutions for the dilemmas the main characters find themselves in or there is no mention of any deaths from the war that ensues (even with the people of the fairy tale world fighting guns with brooms and pitchforks) and this makes the couple of graphic parts stand out as inconsistent. Overall though my daughter liked it so we'll (or she'll) be reading #4 when it comes out.
