I identified a lot with the author's story. The illustrations were very nice, and I appreciated the use of color. Overall a solid read.

Really sweet. Exactly what I needed. Tillie captures life tenderly and beautiful and it was a powerful read.

An interesting memoir about the author’s experience with competitive ice skating and the things going on in her life that impacted her along the way. Overall, enjoyable and thoughtful. There could have been more reflection on themes, but from the author’s note it sounds like the author didn’t want to reflect on the themes of her life herself, which is fine.

"Spinning" is a graphic memoir that tells the story of Tillie Walden's coming of age, coming out, and figuring out her place in this world. This is all set to her twelve year long stint in figure skating, something that she did from a young age all the way through high school. Tillie traverses the highs and extreme lows of growing up different and the painful pressure of trying to be the best at what your Thing is. I thought the art style was beautiful, the storytelling was engaging, and I think anyone who grew up different can get something from this. That, in the end, is what I think this book is about. In the author's note, Walden basically says that its up to the reader what the book is actually about, and I choose that phrase: "growing up different." This book was beautiful. I'm sure that i will return to it when I need comfort.

Wow. This book really moved me. It’s hard to explain, but I think the raw emotions were really stirring, and Walden’s perspective on her own life and childhood/teen years is so straightforwardly honest, it could sometimes feel like I was reading while peeking through my fingers. Just wow.
