Read in two days for a book club I didn’t sign up for. Worth it. Needed to give it more time and apparently listen to more Jay-Z. Very glad I went and had great conversation. Poetry is more fun when you hear what it means to others. Highly recommend. Morgan Parker also has essays on poetry foundation that make this an even better read.

I know it takes seven years for our cells to change
so I started last Thursday the train
was pregnant with stillness and groceries so
do you know what I thought? I wondered
and then I thought I would be sick
with the sound of your feet against hardwood
coming to sweep up twisted spine
with that thing you always say and the way you always
say it you say you’ll get it right next time
-Poem

I’ve thought heavily
about the apocalypse since I was eight years old but
I’ve never considered strategy except
to smoke cigarettes and wait
'-Everything is Bothering Me

Reading this was like looking through a journal that someone only writes in at night. Human and immense, personal and evocative. There are some poets that let you talk a walk in their shoes, and others slip their cigarettes into your hand and smoke with you under midnight window. Morgan is the latter.
