Maybe I'm a cynic, but this story of a post-apocalyptic SF populated by artists -- in which the artists must USE ART to fight off an invading force -- was just a little too fluffy for me. I picked it up to pass the time and it was pleasant enough, and I have to admit it did have a sort of charm, but on the whole nothing about it was especially deep or interesting -- especially given the liberal use of deus ex machina in the form of "the city dreaming" or "the city defending itself" etc. Good airplane read.

Beautiful images, and the city as a character is fantastic. Unfortunately the rest of the characters, and the story, are not quite as well fleshed out. Great idea, though, and a fun, fast read.

This was very enjoyable-- more so than I would have expected once I got started and could pretty well see where it was going. I tbought it would become pedantic and dull but in fact there were lots of imaginative details that gave it a freshness I appreciated. The fact that it takes place in San Francisco didn't hurt either, although if it were a more serious book I would frown on the shortcut of using street names and districts rather than real descriptions.

I feel as though this book would always feel bittersweet, but in 2014, as the city is becoming ever more inhospitable to all but the very wealthy, reading this book makes me sad and hopeful at once. It's beautiful.

Post-apocalyptic fantasy, with a feminist, pacifist slant. The reason I say fantasy, rather than SF, is that things happen in the city of San Francisco that are along the lines of an active spirit of the city, rather than anything explainable by technology.
