Not entirely terrible, but I can probably enumerate more things I disliked than liked about Police—the ways in which mental illness is discussed even by psychologists; a false rape accusation which exists solely to put an obstacle in the path of the protagonist; fridging female characters to provide manpain; clunky prose which often mistakes lists of brand names for description; and so many gimmicky red herrings that it all gets a bit "boy who cried wolf" by the end. It all read as if Nesbø has grown tired of the series—perhaps the Harry Hole books should have ended with the previous installment.

No real redemption here, just a hopelessness that things will go on unchanged with nothing better ahead.

Reading instead of sleeping probably wasn't a smart choice, but I just couldn't put it down.

CAWPILE rating: 9.43/10

Quite a few surprising twists and turns :) plus great suspense throughout the book.

While an interesting read with a variety of compelling characters, this book was trying to do a lot and subsequently fell short in a few areas.
It was a slow starter, I do however take some blame for that as I picked it up not knowing it was 10th in the Harry Hole series. This isn't always an issue however this book seemed to rely heavly on the events of its predecessor to contextualise the first 100-150 pages, as that is when Harry Hole makes his first appearance.
Once settled into the narrative the pace picked up but in trying to lead the reader down several paths and theorise on numerous suspects it lost some momentum and ultimately lacked payoff in the conclusion of a few of these tangents.
I did nonetheless come away intrigued by the character of Harry Hole and would be interested in an instalment that opens with his character at the forefront.
