I loved this book! Every character is flawed and complex. My cup of tea.

A lustful, balls-to-the-wall, cheeky romp that explores the synergy between trauma and toxic relationships. It’s not a book for everyone; the main character is pathetic, inappropriate, but also hilarious. Some of the passages can be problematic (maybe for the sake of satire but it’s hard to say), while the plot is almost unbelievably absurd. Like the relationship at the center of this novel, I too have a love-hate regard for this novel and so I settled on 4/5 stars because I went along for this off-rails ride anyway.

I was sucked in and pulled by my own curiosity with every interaction and every session Greta was given to transcribe. The moral ambiguity was so alluring I couldn’t help but finish the book in less than a week. Every character is pretty severely mentally ill and it left me with a bit of an icky feeling, and yet it was so intriguing the whole way through. Every character felt full and multi-dimensional. I loved it!

I found this book engaging, but in a strange way, it also didn't really jump out to me. A lot of it washed over me. Greta is an interesting, conflicting character and the relationship at the center was so strange, that I had to keep reading. But it was also gone from me once I set the book down. I could see other folks really connecting with this though. I think if you really liked My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, then you would really like this one too.
