This was such an odd book, lots of kinda of grotesque like humor and characters that are just so deeply weird that they feel very human, but in like some of the worst ways we can be human? Needless to say it’s a messy book about messy people and messy relationships. I’m not sure lit fic is my thing because I’m still not entirely sure how to digest what I’ve read and know what it means even though I finished the book hours ago. So to me it was just okay, but it had an interesting premise. I think I just found the characters to be unlikeable and grating, and it didn’t seem like they truly grew or changed that much at the end so it felt like a unfinished resolution.

Critics will call this an "irreverent romp" or "scandalously funny." Very unique, I couldn't put it down, but I'm undecided on the ending. LOTS of content warnings!

Incredibly unhinged. Probably the most uncomfortable book I’ve ever read and I loved every second. Comforted by Greta’s chaos like some tight socks.

One of the books where I could clearly understand why someone might dislike it and I would not have a good argument for why I did love it, but I do.

Character study of unlikeable people who barely seem to live in the real world and have not processed or recovered from their past traumas. I actually liked the ending, though it ends pretty abruptly. I think I finished it because I liked the way JB wrote. It also reminds me of the indie character study films in the '00s that either don't come around as often or have disappeared completely in favor of awful franchise movies.

"Although it felt like the edge of nowhere, they were only a one-cigarette drive from town."
"Yes, people age horribly. They suffer strokes. Their bodies and brains fall apart. But the male ego? Firmly intact until the bitter end."
"At the waitress station, she casually poked through his bag with her foot. It was full of nerdy library books, including Gödel, Escher, Bach."

Even though I hated all the characters (except Luke and Piñon), I will absolutely be watching the HBO adaptation. WAY too many bugs in that old farmhouse though.
