Average. I don’t think horror graphic novels are really my thing, but I liked the concept of all the keys. This definitely kept me interested.

Bad writing, worse art. None of the characters are very sympathetic or likable. Joe Hill’s understanding of sex/gender through the “gender key” is incredibly dated and weird. The teenage boy giving an adult trucker oral was really unnecessary and gross.  Seems like Joe Hill cares more about delivering shocks than an actual story.

Brilliantly constructed, but read with caution. It’s very violent with significant gore. The horror aspect should be obvious from the title alone, but it’s more horror and tragedy than frightening. One of the main antagonists being a teenager is disconcerting though it fits the plot and characterization. He’s very much a tragedy all on his own.

Creative storyline, a little boy finds a door with a key. While that doesn’t sound like much, after going through hell in the summer, this little boy goes on a wild adventure. (I won’t spoil it, though I’m sure most who read this know the gist of the story).

Intrigued to continue reading the story in graphic format. Little to be desired in my opinion for the graphics though. Everyone looks so rough.

I love Locke & Key, and it's hard to imagine a stronger start. We begin with
an incredibly traumatic experience
and have nothing but instant empathy for the Locke family, all of whom are well-written and feel like real people as they struggle with the fallout of
their father's violent murder
. The plot of this volume is kind of a slow burn, and
the arch-antagonist takes a back seat
. I love the way Joe Hill writes his villains - they're uncompromising, truly nasty pieces of work. The underlying mythology of the series, though not as fully developed as it will be later, is intriguing.

I can see Gabriel Rodriguez's art style being divisive, but I'm fully on board. It's stylized, incredibly detailed, and does a great job supporting the story.
