I kept waiting for this book to pick up and become good or at the very least the author would give some reason for sympathizing with the protagonist. I finished the book, but I didn't feel my time was worth it. I work at a library and I see this book checked out because the cover looks like it could fit in next to a cozy mystery or some chick lit mystery, but I now know why nobody has said anything about the book even though it checks out alot. The audiobook has such a great reader and at times I found myself laughing along with her, but she wasn't good enough to save the mildly interesting storyline.

Why have I not heard of Patricia Marx? I feel like I should have, before now. This is funny and self-involved and has a great title, and that's kind of enough for me. If you liked Winner of the National Book Award, by Jincy Willett, this would make an interesting companion read.

I like Marx's magazine writing but this was getting very mixed reviews. But the Thurber runner-up made me decide to give it a shot. But it was just okay. The chick-lit angle didn't bother me. It just wasn't that funny. The main character was realistic enough, and didn't sound just like the author, but she wasn't sympathetic enough. And the villain wasn't interesting enough to actually dislike. I sort of chuckled a few times but that was it. I liked the parents.

It took a couple of tries, but this chick-lit satire grew on me. It's clever, funny, and sharp. The narrator spares neither herself or others from the snark. It's like a modern day Wodehouse or Waugh, though it is difficult to discern the time period at first. (For the first couple of chapters, I was pretty sure it was set in the 1960s; then came a 21st century reference.) There are moments of gleeful frustration as the heroine (and and most around her) does stupid and ridiculous things you know will turn out badly. It's a fun way to pass the commute.

I didn't like this book.

The reviews said that this book was "hilarious" and to be honest, I think I laughed once...and it was more of a chuckle.

Perhaps it's because I couldn't understand WHY the protagonist did the things she did. I didn't relate to her at all.

It's just okay.
