The Long Walk is an incredibly dark and disturbing story about an annual competition in which 100 young men walk across New England in a dystopian United States. The physical and mental breakdown of the participants over a 5 day period slowly reveals the consequences of resistance and the circumstances that drive entry into the Long Walk. The reader is immersed in the walk itself, with minimal exploration of the history of how it was established. It is true horror without supernatural elements.
*Note: The Long Walk was written in 1979, so there are some dated references and language.
The digital edition included an additional unrelated story about a man accused of a murder he didn't commit. I found this an enjoyable bonus after such a heavy read.
