I really enjoyed the format of this memoir, jumping between chapters that focus on Des’ iconic 2018 Boston Marathon and broader chapters in her growth through the sport. I appreciate hearing about her grit and ethos- I feel like Des always sat on the periphery of my running knowledge, so this book was a fantastic introduction to her life. While her reading skills aren’t flawless (though better than Kara Goucher’s), her storytelling is engaging.
Having now read Des’, Kara’s, and Lauren’s book, I appreciate the conversation they have with each other- all three came up at a similar time, and hearing their different perspective on their experiences and piecing together the timeline between the three is super interesting as a distance running fan. This memoir is probably my favorite of the three, mostly because of the unique format and the focus on Des’ personal growth, and maybe because I didn’t follow her as closely, it was deeply rewarding to learn more about her.

If you're a runner seeking motivation, Des Linden's story is one worth immersing into. The chapter alternate between her experience of running the Boston Marathon and key points of her career. It's an inside look of what the challenges may be more for a pressional long distance runner.

Wow wow wow wow wow! I have always admired Des but learning so much more about her and her dedication makes me admire her even more. It doesn’t matter if you know anything about running reading this will give you a new perspective on what it means to chase your dreams and never give up.
