I think I’d put this at 4.5 stars.

I am in the middle of multiple series right now, and had plans to read or finish some of these other books before I continued this one. I’m just not sure I can put off the sequel for long. This book was intense. The pacing was incredible, always something hard hitting, but never feeling forced. I love so many of the characters in this book. Some die, some live, some I’m unsure about. I’ve heard a lot that this is the worst book in the series, if that’s the case I will love this series. Seen that this book starts off really slow and is hard to get into. Personally I didn’t really struggle with it. Maybe took awhile to feel fully invested, but part of that is just being introduced to this new world and these new characters. I really can’t wait to see where this story goes in the sequels. Loved this book!

4 instead of 5 stars for some pacing struggles I had (especially early on) but WOW. Took me a bit to get through the first 250 pages and then I devoured the final 400ish in two days. The complexity of the relationships in this book is nothing short of brilliant, and the way that Gwynne manages to convey the richness of the friendships is gorgeous. I’m starting to have an inkling of why the Faithful and the Fallen is everyone’s North Star for the found family trope.

I adore Corban and his companions (both human and animal alike) with my whole heart. Incredibly excited to continue this series!

This book didn’t work for me despite the general premise being very interesting. One can tell that this was the first book the author ever wrote and this book is so full of cliches and predictability it wasn’t fun to read for me. And I wonder if he ever met a woman in his life because the female representation was lacking very much. And the only female character in this book starts crying because of the smallest things? Yeah not for me
