Add a little class and history to your next afternoon tea…

The Official Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea Cookbook by Downton Abbey is a licensed cookbook focused on tea, snacks, spreads, crackers, and any other accoutrement you might need.

Accompanied by photos and quotes (as well as a sizable tea intro section), this book is a fun breakdown of common period tea elements during the early 20th century (and naturally many of those are carried over from earlier generations).

While we in the United States might not be familiar with many of these snacks, the book helpfully includes anpragepahnor so of historical and cultural detail on each item and occasionally an anecdote or two.

Even if you don't use this to prep for a nixe tea event, it's still very informative and fun to peruse.

Very posh and British with authentic afternoon tea vibes. Along with tantalizing recipes, there's also some good information on the history of afternoon tea.

This book has everything you need to host a traditional afternoon tea party.

The book is beautiful with pictures from the show and many of the dishes that it includes recipes for. It’s well put together but I don’t want to rate it since I’ve not yet tried to make any recipes, just read through the text. I’m not sure how much confidence I would put in some of the historical context provided, since their few paragraphs on corsetry is riddled with typical myths that are easily dispelled with a modicum of research.

A delightful book for Downton Abbey fans and for everyone who loves the afternoon tea tradition.

The Downton Abbey story offers the perfect background for a delightful book about afternoon tea. I found the short history of tea, tea making and everything that developed around it, very interesting. It recalls that tea, politics, women power and society have very interlinked histories.

The recipes are illustrated with very nice photos for the series. The explanations are very well done, and each recipe gives a little information about the particular cake or pastry in the context of the times, together with little remarks bringing you right into the story. For example, the fact that you are free to use other jams (than raspberry or strawberry) for your Bakewell tart and add a little sugary glaze, but should you do so, Mrs Patmore would call it by another name entirely. I also discovered in this book that there is such a thing as mock clotted cream and a recipe for it...

Even for those who are not fans of Downton Abbey, this book will be a great one to have as a collection of quite a number of great cakes to make to enjoy with a nice cup of tea. A real mouthwatering read.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author Gareth Neame for giving me the privilege of an advance reader copy of this book.

Do you miss Downton Abbey? Do you wish you could take afternoon tea with the Dowager Countess of Grantham? Then you'll probably love this. Easy recipes mixed with show quotes and a bit of the history of the tradition. You can't go wrong, really.
