There was a lot of potential but it seemed the writing style fell flat towards the middle which made the graphic and intense scenes somewhat unbearable… I see where he was going and I think the story was there but it could have used some more time to be refined and have depth added. It seemed there was a big and deep story of which only the skimmed top was presented.

The brutally direct and crass writing style is also not something of my wheelhouse, personally. I like my dark writing to be whimsical and poetic, it makes the pain something with which I can emphasize more easily. But these characters seemed somewhat one-note and ill-defined when it came to trying to understand their decision making. There were also sensitive components that I felt deserved more tact with their delivery.

Potential was there but this one feel short for me.

"although Ghost had thought of God many times before, this time he imagined him as a man"

Eriiiic what happened? I genuinely don't have anything good to say about this like I have no idea what this plot was supposed to, it just felt like words on a page

Honestly, I was super excited about the idea of ritual magic being featured in a story but we didn’t really get to see that. It ended up being very graphic and just plain weird. The story itself was an interesting premise but can we stop demonizing those who practice ritual magic? Not everyone wants to take over the world.

I did enjoy the queer representation though!!! I was confused about the dual story lines but it all woven together by the end. It seemed like a convenient way to use a queer story but it was done nicely and it was two males (one who is a police officer) so it touched on a lot of things in regards to masculinity and queerness.

Interesting book with some weird stuff going on!

This book has a pervasive sense of dread and was a fast read. The writing style felt a little clumsy and unclear, but it may have been a stylistic choice. There’s some incredibly graphic violence in here (and a trigger warning for anti-LGBTQ violence, in particular). I liked the overall message it was going for, but the resolution was somewhat baffling and ultimately it didn’t succeed for me.
