#3in the series and my favourite so far. I polished this off in nearly one sitting, as a passenger on a car drive, coming home from hols.
Unusual murder styles, sarcastic humour and a lovely setting. What is not to like?
Hamish Macbeth is really growing on me and I am definitely continuing with this series.

Constable Hamish Macbeth has been transferred against his will to the lonely village of Cnothar in the Scottish Highlands. He's homesick for his village of Lochdubh and contending with a detective chief inspector who would love nothing more than to have Hamish off the police force. Then the most hated man in town is murdered and his body dumped into a lobster tank where it is discovered when there are only bones remaining. Hamish becomes the second most hated man in Cnothar as he works to solve the murder.

I love the earlier books in the Hamish MacBeth series. They’re so much less rote than later books. They’re cozy, and a little predictable (you know Blair will be an asshole, you know Hamish will solve the crime, you know Hamish will probably have a love interest and will be trying to forget Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, etc.). I love the village characters (caricatures really), and while you usually know who’s going to get murdered within the first 40-50 pages (due to the title), that doesn’t spoil the story or the resolution.
