Rating: 3/5 stars

Bryn thinks she is going on a weekend away when she ends up accidentally married—to Caiden Verran, the king of the Dark Fae.

I read this for a buddy read, and I didn’t choose it, which means I had no preconceived notions going in and no real idea of what to expect. That said, the best part of this one was definitely the buddy read commentary for me, and the book fell super short of even my nonexistent expectations. It took me almost a week just to get beyond chapter two, and the entire time I was alternately bored or annoyed by the characters, who had absolutely no personality beyond being incredibly dumb and severely annoying.

I did find the plot somewhat interesting (if a bit bonkers) and feel like the concept here could have really worked, which is why I went with 3 stars over 2. Unfortunately, the execution was just not enjoyable for my tastes and I’m not sure yet whether I’ll be continuing with the series.

CW: Violence/blood/death; mentions of death of parent

Its fantasy meets dark romance. What more could you want!? I love the power dynamic they have and all the banter between the main female character and all the other characters. The switching pov was so interesting and definitely strengthened my love for this book. The inner conflict and the back and forth definitely made it frustrating however juicy details came fast and it kept my interest enough to read it in one day. The different mythical characters and varying degrees to magic was extremely interesting. Cant wait to start #2

I found the storyline and fae world to be pretty interesting overall. And the big twist was a little predictable but very fun to read. However this book delves heavy into the miscommunication trope which is one of my least favorite tropes. The characters kinda make me wanna rip my hair out and scream ‘just talk to each other you hard headed idiots.’ I’d recommend it to my friends though. Very steamy and fun

I feel like the story does a bait-and-switch with the "darkness" of Caiden and his brothers. You get a glimpse of bad-boy darkness in the first scene when he's confronting someone in the club, but that is basically all of it. It moves on quickly to focus on the romance. This is fine, but I feel like I was set up and then left wanting. The story comes to a neat and tidy close, with room to continue the series. I don't think I'm inclined to read the others, which focus on the other brothers' stories. Their characters weren't fleshed out much and I'm just not curious enough about them *shrug*.

I have to be honest, I find it so hard to believe the author maintains she had never read ACOTAR before this. It’s basically ACOTAR, but make it modern. But I guess at their heart, they’re both Beauty and the Beast retellings, so I assume there was bound to be similarities?

Surprisingly, this wasn’t as smutty of a read as I initially thought and I’m actually grateful for that. At just shy of 300 pages, I don’t think we would have gotten the plot and character development if spice had been the main focus. Don’t get me wrong, it’s plenty filthy for all my smut goblins out there, but I truly felt each scene had its appropriate place that never took away from the core story.

It ends on the most hilarious of cliffhangers (before the epilogue), which all but ensures I pick up the next installment!

This read like fan fic to me. And that’s not a dig I will probably read the next one. But I also look for more in an MMC than just protect or patronize

So first of all, this book is extremely spicy, especially towards the end. Like WOW, even with the description I was not expecting this level of spice, but honestly I feel as if the sex scenes are pretty well-written. Consent in particular is handled very well, so if that is a concern of yours, worry not.

The plot was definitely over-the-top dramatic, but I honestly enjoyed that aspect of this book. Nothing was even remotely realistic, and that was part of the fun.

The one complaint I have is with the style of writing, especially towards the end. The writing definitely has an immature tone to it. I'd describe it as an elevated Wattpad level of writing. This took me out of the book sometimes, and detracted a lot from the story overall.

Gina Maxwell has won me over as a fan. I picked up her other book "The Rebel King" just as a grab at the library.... so I read this book second, but the great thing is...they can be read as a standalone, and still fall absolutely in love! I immediately  was hooked on the passion Caiden & Bryn share. These books also have very sexy adult scenes without feeling like I'm losing the plot. This is a real love story, steamy passionate, and fairytale like, but real flaws in characters that are learning to love themselves, as well as their true mate! You MUST READ!!!! I'm definitely adding this Gem to my physical library!
