Feels weird to be giving stars to memoir but I guess even the most heartbreaking story can be told in an unbelievable way. I tried my best to not read it as a fiction work, to avoid judging the author as if she was yet another protagonist because no human is truly perfect and it's not a point of memoir as a genre anyways.
What's truly unique in this one is the style, something between prose and poetry, yet it's very raw and honest. I really liked how discalculia is used as a form of expression not only related to disablity to understand mathematics but also to these misunderstandings about the author's mental condition that she experienced throughout her life. It's sort of an allegory of everything that had happened and was miscalculated; her life a system she distrupts by disablity to make right decisions.
I wasn't entirely sold on the form though. It reads quite as a journal that we only get short pieces of, mixed with little 'medical' notes that someone cold write down when they read an article in a science magazine. The Pythagorean snippets had no impact on me whatsoever, I'm not sure what their point was other than causing confusion. I could see the intention of using this form but sometimes it gave me a sense of chaos I wasn't a fan of.
I think what ultimately stops me from rating it higher is that the contents didn't hit me as much as they probably should have. I couldn't fully emerge in the author's thoughts and resonate with her experiences (but I see lots of potential here!)

Such a fascinating book. I will admit, I was drawn in by the cover. I love a book that uses a math motif from someone who struggles with math. So much better than a math motif from someone who is naturally good at it. Also, the understanding of line and space was superb, I felt like it left the reader with a lot of room to digest the writing.

This book was not at all what I thought it would be. It is a wild ride of trauma and healing, I feel like I understand a piece of humanity better for having read it, but I was glad it was a short read. I don’t think if I’d fully understood it I would have picked it up, but with the short length and the fast readability it only made sense to finish it and I’m glad I did.
