This is the first book in a mystery series. If you are looking for a good mystery, this is not the book for you. The crime was interesting, but the solution was bleh (I think I would have preferred no solution to the one that was given). This book focus on the main character, his non-existent dating and relationship skills (both romantic and familiar), his drinking habits and anger. I can’t think a single positive trait of this character. There were other detectives, but they all had as much personality as a stone. I only gave this book 2 stars because it was a look in the reality of Sweden.

Enjoyed that there were several mysteries ongoing that felt natural. The main character is not really likeable as a person but as a police officer doing detective work, he makes sense minus all the stupid instances of him getting beat up.

I chose to read this for an International Fiction class because I have seen the BBC show and really liked it. I would say that this is a very mediocre crime novel, especially when (invariably) compared to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (same publishing house, country, etc.). The writing is okay, a little flat, and the story hits points where it feels stagnant, but the character Kurt Wallander is the reason to read this. He is a hero that is plagued by many demons and, while being a great detective, is self-destructive. Anyway, a decent read. I might read the next book in the series and see if it the writing is better.

Rare case where the TV show (Kenneth Branagh as the lead) was better than the book. Wallander is a sad sad man. I kept wanting him to SLEEP for goodness sakes.

These comments are based on the translation from Swedish into English. It might be a better book in the original or my opinion might be because I such a masshole.
