Thick is a wonderfull collection of essays that explore the black experience in America and how racial inequality persists on the low in American society. The essays explore topics from the trend of Thick women in media, to thick whites who act as gatekeepers. Despite these serious topics, Cottom's personal experience add humor and make the essays easy to read page turners. If you ever wondered why America would elect Trump after Obama or why black women need to be overexperienced to land white jobs, this book will provide you with some of the answers.

I don't read much non fiction but I'm trying to learn and incorporate different voices and experiences into my perceptions of the world around me. These essays range in topic and I found myself reading the footnotes and looking up things I didn't understand in order to absorb them. Really enjoyed it.

I normally need to take frequent breaks when I'm reading an essay collection. I did not need any breaks.

I'm always in awe of Tressie McMillan Cottom's ability to convey an argument, or sum up a point, with a sentence that makes you feel like you've been hit over the head but in a very profound way. Each of these short essays has something to offer, though as of course is the case with all essay collections the extent to which you'll connect to each one will vary from reader to reader. For me, the hardest essay to read was the one about the death of her newborn daughter thanks to medical incompetence and racism; the most bitterly funny the one about how she wants a Black woman to have the chance to write banal op-eds at a major media outlet. Highly recommended.

This is a really smart and thoughtful collection of essays.  I've read several essay collections about race, so many of the themes are familiar.  But the language in this collection forced me to slow down to appreciate the depth and focus of each of the topics that were tackled.  Humour was used very effectively.  My favourite essays were 'Know Your Whites' and 'Girl 6'.
