What a confusing case but cleared up very well by our pipe smoking detective. Very much enjoyed this one. I was curious to see where it would go and a few surprises along the way.

While I enjoyed this book, as I do all of [a:Simenon Georges|19301535|Simenon Georges|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]’s work, I found this less satisfying than the several that preceded it. The moment when Maigret works out the problem was never fully clear to me, nor are the characters as compelling as others he has written. The story also seemed to have too many pieces for me to be satisfied. I prefer Simenon when he is at has simplest. So a solid production, but not my favourite.

Curious about the series and picked up this one because it was short. The plot was fine, but unsurprising. The writing seemed to be more tell them show - it had an understated quality to it that I wasn't expecting. Overall I was expecting something stronger given the popularity of this series.

This particular Maigret is almost stream of consciousness in style with lots of odd little jumps and starts between Maigret's thoughts, actions and speech. As with most of the Maigret's, you can often work out what happened or who did it fairly easily. The joy of the reading experience is watching Maigret work it through in his own inimitable way. There is an engaging sense of charm and self-importance that oozes not only from Maigret, but from the writer as well.
