An interesting setting. If I hadn't read the short story in the same setting and I'm not sure I would have followed it though. Still, I'm interested to read the other book.

After I second read my estimation of this book really increased. The exploration of faith and the main character’s crisis of faith was beautiful and moving. The world itself also felt original and alluring. The one place where I felt this book really lost a step was with the characterization of Ehiru. I never felt like I knew who Ehiru was when he was well, which made it more difficult to feel the tragedy of his decent. Really solid book nonetheless.

I would've DNFed it if I didn't have to read it for class. The characters and world aren't for me.

Interesting (albeit long-winded) worldbuilding; characters that develop to be much stronger through the course of the novel; interesting plot. GREAT opening. Despite all of the above, it just didn't hook me and somehow remained a little shallow the whole time. The pacing was also a little wonky at times: one half of a journey took ~50 pages, and the return trip took about three.

Interesting concepts, though, and I am interested enough to potentially pick up the second book in this duology at a later date.
