A very quick read. One of the series I started in elementary school and am now finishing.

I remember reading this as a kid and loving it. It's just as good as I remember!

Luke is a "shadow child," a third child forbidden by the government. He's spent his entire life in hiding, only meeting his parents and two older brothers. One day, he sees the face of a girl in the window of a house where he knows two boys already live, and takes the risk of leaving his house to meet her. Jen wants to take on the government, demand that they recognize third children, and wants Luke to join her.

The book is thought-provoking, suspenseful, and just the right length!

No numerical review, just a reread from my childhood. All I can think to say is that this was a wild book to have a bunch of elementary schoolers read.

I read this book first back in 2007 for school.
We only ever read the first book, but I was never able to forget about it. I will be reading the whole series, in hopes to find out what happens.

This book is about a boy named Luke, who is a third child. In the plot, there is something called the "population law." The law basically states that all families in this country, are not allowed to have more than two children. So Luke is a "shadow child" or "a child among the hidden."
The woods behind his farm house are torn down and a development of houses are put in. One day Luke is spying out of his attic vent (since he is no longer outside for fear of someone now seeing him.) He notices a child's face in a house where he knows the parents already have two sons. This discovery sparks bravery and change within Luke.

I don't want to say much more for fear of ruining the book.
It's a very brisk read. I reread the whole thing in one sitting.

Among the Hidden is one of those books that gives you those "What if" thoughts. It really makes you think of the future. What if this really were to happen? Its what makes books like these scary. Haddix really did a wonderful job creating a dark, mysterious book about a boy and a girl who outcasted because of the new society's rules against third children.
