I liked this, because I wanted to like it, and I certainly did like it by the end, when the narration picked up pace and the characters rounded out, with reasons inferrable (is that a word?) for their actions.

A harrowing account of a young boy’s life during and after Vietnam’s reunification. Kien’s life changes so fast: privileged to destitute. The contrast in his living conditions made it hard for me to believe that a child could survive such a disruptive, violent adjustment.
