There are a lot of jilted spouses and parents not being able to let go of their adult children in this book, which means I'm not really coming at it from the right place, and a few of the stories just felt repetitive as a result. I'm sure if I'd lived through experiences like this I'd be more able to see the nuances between each scenario.

That said, there are a few very good stories in here, including the titular one. I also liked the story that wasn't really "about" butchering a chicken, the father of the blind girl, and a few others. But I'll have to come back to this book when my life perspectives are different, I think.

I loved some of the stories in this collection and I'm already planning to re-read them. Black's writing is beautiful.

Beautiful collection of domestic stories. Could not put this one down. Looking forward to Black's novel coming out next year.

My first short story collection and I think I picked a good one. The short stories were just enough to pull on your heartstrings and leave you wanting more, slightly satisfied, and yet at the same time, very unsatisfied. I think it was perfect for the story because much like the vibrant characters, readers were left wanting more.
